History
40km south of Strasbourg and away from traffic of the main wine route, Reichsfeld, the idyllic and preserved village which offers itself to those who want to get off the traditional journey. So take your time to encounter the unpredictable surprise and be tempted by tasting wine in my cellar, than sharing our passions about wine together.
Since 12th century, the count of Andlau already planted the vines in Reichsfeld. Later on, in 14th century, the monastic vineyard has been developed around Baumgarten Cistercian abbey, extending from Schieferberg to Muenchberg.According to the book of ”Phantheum Hygiasticum”, written by Doctor Claudius Deodatus (1628) in Basel, Plus the “New Tisch Book” by Joan Sig Elsholzius, wines from Reichsfeld had been listed among the best wines of Alsace.
For more than two centuries, the BOHN family kept inheriting their knowledge about wine from father handover to son. After my parents René and Hélène, It’s me Bernard who gives the impression and spirit to the wines of BOHN now.

The Wines
In Alsace, traditionally, the variety of the grapes give the wine its name. Within this variety, may associate with the name of terroir.
The perfect match of the vine and the earth is the result of ancestral knowledge. In contrast to the wine from the New World, Europe has been able, over the years, planting right grapes in right place, which explains that the quality of Alsatian wines keep one step ahead of their competitors.
The Crémant d'Alsace is also one of the best sparking wines all over the France, our Crémant are made from Chardonnay and Pinot-Noir and harvested in well maturity, so that they are fruity without adding any sugar. In addition, my Crémant stay in the bottle with the lees more than 2 years for the traditional Brut, (much longer than the legislation), and 6 years for vintage, enriches tertiary aromas and gives great persistence.
Our late harvest wines, Carte Blanche and Selection de Grains Nobles, revealing soft palette of concentration and candied fruits. Obviously this is also the result of harvesting grapes affected by noble rot sorted manually.
Even the exclusivity of the straw wine that Napoleon drank in Strasbourg is now reserved for Jura region, I was one of the pioneers who revived the straw wine in Alsace in 1997 anyway. It comes from a blend of 3 varietals grapes and vinifies without oxidation, this wine has very good concentration and cool incomparable. It is sold under the brand name of” Tears of Venus” (Les Larmes de Vénus, "It is a masterpiece" said the best sommelier of France.)

Exceptional Terroirs
Rare combination of nature.
Located on a very steep slope, oriented in south.S.E which sheltered by the Ungersberg hill 901 meters high.
The Schieferberg: A unique terroir in Alsace. It is composed by shale of Villé dating from the Precambrian.
The stones accumulate the heat during the day and return it back at night.
It is between the shale layers where our vines get their minerality.
Wines from Schieferberg are also persistent and racy while keeping a great finesse. A little shy in the youth time, after 3 years, it begins to show its character, and after 6 years, it reveals the mineral aromas, and will makes you flabbergast after 10 years.
The Oberhagel:Located in the heart of Schieferberg, traditionally it harvested slightly more ripen, this is the dry wine for gastronomy. While tasting it, we can find the aromas of candies citrus, anise, mint and stone minerality for Riesling and aromas of quince for Pinot Gris.
On shale, Riesling is the king, but the Pinot Gris and Noir and Sylvaner also like these shale terroir.
The Sohlenberg:the Grand Cru Muenchberg and Sauthal are rose sandy greso-volcano soil. As Schieferberg, the soil is draining, airing and warms up promptly. Riesling is expressed by aromas of white flowers and pineapple with a hint of minerality. This red earth is also adapted to the Pinot-Noir and gives it the aromas of raspberry, blackberry and black cherry.
From vine to glass
As a passionate and atypical winegrower Bernard immortalises with his son Arthur the Bohn family’s viticultural tradition. The Bohn family has lived in Reichsfeld for over three centuries. This father and son team tend their vines on the surrounding hills (330 – 400 metres) on which grapes benefit from a prolonged and slow maturing process.
The unique shale and greso-volcanic terroir is meticulously looked after. Yield is kept low and grapes are harvested by hand. Natural diversity and wildlife conservation are fundamental values for the Bohn wineyard. For many years Bernard and Arthur have chosen, as independent winegrowers to follow organic, ecological methods for their vineyards.
This logic is taking them towards official certification for organic wines. This three year process which began in 2017 will produce the first official organic harvest in 2020.
Bernard and Arthur are trained oenologists and are extremely demanding with their wines. They explain that their wine has to taste of the local climate and terroir. They recommend minimalistic wine production without any oenological inputs.
A range of wines has been developed since 2010 using sulfite free maceration methods. For a majority of the vintage, the vinification ends with prolonged ageing in old barrels from the local Alsace area or casks in order to achieve the necessary balance and persistence of great gastronomic wines : mineral, aired, persistent, fresh and easily digested.

My Philosophy
Creator of wines with character.
If the genius of wine expresses itself by the ability of the vine stock to reveal the minerality and aromas of grapes and terroir, it’s the winemaker who gives the soul to the wine which will be reflected with atmosphere and harmony.
I love:
Sharing a glass of good wine,
Being in communion with nature,
Planting vines,
Cherishing them,
Harvesting the grapes,
Transforming them into divine beverage to reach the initial pleasure,
Sharing a glass of wine or more, create the new world.
In the morning I wake up...
Planting vines,
Cherishing them...
And thus repeats the toil of winemaker while evolving towards perfection.
And then, put a few of my dreams into bottles that will awake your senses and open your mind, so you can share the happiness in your turn.
It is important that our lives have the great dreams and make them come true without hesitation.
A happy man is the one who realizes his dreams.
So my friend, fill up my glass...
